Introduction: why custom brushes?

Can't find a standard brush that fits? Unusual machine dimensions, special material requirements, or a brush that has to match your process exactly?

A custom brush is the solution.

From anti-static strip brushes for electronics and food-grade roller brushes for the food industry to precision cleaning brushes for printing, every industry has its own brush requirements. When standard products cannot meet them, custom work becomes the only option. This guide takes you through the types of custom brush, the manufacturing process, a price analysis, and how to choose a brush factory you can trust.

Illustration of designing a custom brush on a computer

What is a custom brush, and why have one made?

A custom brush is an industrial brush designed and manufactured to a customer's specific requirements, tailored entirely to the operating environment, the machine specifications and the material requirements.

Custom brushes vs standard brushes

Standard brushes are general-purpose products supplied from stock.

The specifications are fixed, delivery is fast and the price is lower, but the dimensions and materials cannot be changed.

Custom brushes are completely different:

  • Flexible dimensions: any length, width or trim length can be matched
  • Choice of material: from nylon and metal wire to special high-temperature fibers, all can be specified
  • Custom structure: the base shape, tufting method and mounting method can all be designed
  • Optimized function: performance is optimized entirely for the application

Put simply, a standard product is an off-the-rack suit, and a custom brush is one made to measure by a tailor.

Three situations where custom fits

When should you choose a custom brush?

Situation 1: unusual machine dimensions Your conveyor is 387 mm wide, but standard products on the market only come in 300 mm or 400 mm. A custom brush fits the machine exactly, so it neither fails to fit nor leaves a gap.

Situation 2: special material requirements Food processing needs food-grade materials that comply with the Sanitation Standard for Food Utensils, Containers and Packages issued by Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare (and with FDA 21 CFR 177 for export to the US), the electronics industry needs anti-static performance, and chemical plants need acid- and alkali-resistant materials. Standard products usually cannot meet these special requirements.

Situation 3: performance needs optimizing A standard product works, but not well enough: cleaning power falls short, durability is too low, or the brush wears out too quickly. Adjusting the filament material, density and stiffness through custom work can greatly improve performance.

Industry application examples (electronics / food / printing)

Electronics A PCB production line needs an anti-static strip brush to remove dust from circuit boards without generating static that damages components. A custom anti-static nylon strip brush with conductive fibers and a grounding design solves the problem.

Food A biscuit production conveyor needs a food-grade roller brush to clear crumbs. The custom brush uses PBT filament that complies with FDA 21 CFR 177, withstands 120°C and meets food safety regulations, keeping the product hygienic.

Printing The precision rollers of a printing press need an ultra-fine cleaning brush so that ink residue does not affect quality. A custom ultra-fine fiber brush with a filament diameter of only 0.1 mm and a special tufting density gives a thorough clean.

Types of custom brush and material selection

There are many types of custom brush, and choosing the right type and material is the first step to success.

By structure (strip brush / disc brush / roller brush / short strip brush)

Strip brush The base is a long strip that can be tufted continuously. It suits door gap sealing, conveyor cleaning and machine guarding. It is the most flexible form and can be cut to any length. See more in the complete guide to strip brush specifications and applications.

Disc brush A round base plate with the filament arranged radially, commonly used for polishing, grinding and surface treatment. The diameter, filament stiffness and density can be customized as needed.

Roller brush A cylindrical core tufted around the full 360 degrees, used for conveyor cleaning, dust removal and guiding. Sizes from a small 10 cm to a large 150 cm can be made to order. YC Brushes has extensive experience in roller brush production.

Short strip brush Similar to a strip brush, but the term usually refers to a shorter, single-piece brush strip, commonly used for equipment sealing, baffles and dust removal.

By material (comparison of nylon / metal / natural bristle / PP-PBT)

Only with the right material can a brush perform at its best.

MaterialPropertiesOperating temperatureCommon applicationsRelative price
NylonWear resistant, flexible, strong recovery-40°C to 100°CGeneral cleaning, conveyor brushesMedium
Metal wire (steel / brass)High hardness, strong rust removal-40°C to 400°CRust removal, surface treatment, polishingHigh
Natural bristle (hog bristle / horsehair)Soft, absorbs oil well-20°C to 60°CPrecision cleaning, polishingMedium-high
PP (polypropylene)Resistant to acids, alkalis and chemicals-20°C to 80°CChemical plants, pickling linesLow
PBT (polyester)Heat resistant, wear resistant, excellent recovery-40°C to 150°CHigh-temperature environments, food processingMedium-high

The custom brush manufacturing process (YC Brushes SOP)

Understanding the manufacturing process helps you keep track of lead times and the details to communicate.

Below is the standard custom process at YC Brushes.

Step 1 - Requirements analysis and design confirmation

The first step is to understand your requirements in detail.

We will ask about:

  • Operating environment (temperature, humidity, chemicals)
  • Machine specifications (dimensions, mounting method)
  • Functional requirements (cleaning, dust removal, sealing, guiding)
  • Budget and quantity

After gathering the information, the engineer assesses feasibility, gives preliminary recommendations and prepares 2D/3D design drawings for confirmation.

Step 2 - 3D-printed sample and testing

This is an advantage exclusive to YC Brushes.

Sampling at an ordinary brush factory takes 7-10 days, because temporary tooling has to be made.

YC Brushes uses 3D printing to make physical samples quickly; sample lead times are quoted per specification.

This greatly shortens the development schedule and lets you verify sooner whether the design meets your needs. If adjustments are needed after testing the sample, it can be quickly revised and sampled again until you are fully satisfied.

Want the full manufacturing details? See The brush manufacturing process explained, where every step is described in detail.

Step 3 - Tooling and first article confirmation

Once the sample is approved, the project moves to the tooling stage.

The production tooling is made by CNC precision machining, with precision of up to ±0.05 mm. When the tooling is finished, a first article is made for you to verify, to make sure production quality matches the sample.

Volume production formally begins only after the first article is approved.

Step 4 - Volume production and quality control

In volume production, YC Brushes uses three inspections:

  1. First article inspection: the first article is checked before each production batch begins
  2. In-process inspection: random sampling during production
  3. Final inspection: 100% inspection before shipment

The quality standards include:

  • Dimensional tolerance ±0.5 mm
  • Pull test ≥5 kg
  • No appearance defects
  • Intact packaging

When volume production is complete, the goods are fully packed and shipped with the delivery documents, so that every brush you receive meets the specification.

Custom brush price analysis (2025 reference prices)

Price is an important consideration in any decision to go custom.

Let us break down the key factors that affect it.

6 factors that affect price

1. Material cost Prices differ enormously between materials. Nylon is the basic option, metal wire costs about 2-3 times as much as nylon, and special carbon fiber or food-grade PBT costs more still.

2. Dimensions The larger the brush, the more material it uses and the higher the price. For example, a 50 cm roller brush usually costs 2.5-3 times as much as a 20 cm roller brush.

3. Tufting density High-density tufting needs more filament and more labor time. A 50% increase in density raises the cost by about 30-40%.

4. Tooling fee Custom work needs dedicated tooling, and the tooling fee ranges from NT$8,000 to NT$30,000 depending on complexity. But tooling is a one-time investment, and once it is amortized into the unit price, the larger the quantity the better the value.

5. Order quantity This is the factor that affects the unit price the most. The unit price for 300 pieces may be 30-50% higher than for 1,000 pieces. For the detailed price differences between quantity tiers, see our full breakdown of custom brush pricing.

6. Processing complexity Special shapes, mixed materials, or additional surface treatment (such as zinc plating or anodizing) all add to the cost.

Reference price ranges in the market

Below are reference prices for common custom brushes in 2025 in the Taiwan market (based on an order of 500 pieces):

Strip brush, 50 cm

  • Nylon: NT$35-55 per piece
  • Metal wire: NT$90-140 per piece

Roller brush

  • Small (20 cm long × 5 cm diameter): NT$350-700 per piece
  • Medium (50 cm long × 10 cm diameter): NT$1,200-2,200 per piece
  • Large (100 cm long × 15 cm diameter): NT$3,500-6,000 per piece

Disc brush

  • 10 cm diameter: NT$120-250 per piece
  • 20 cm diameter: NT$280-450 per piece

The prices above are for reference only. The actual quote varies with the specification, material and quantity.

How to get an accurate quote

Want to know the exact price?

Providing the following information lets the factory give an accurate quote sooner:

  • Purpose and operating environment
  • Dimensions (length, width, height, trim length, base thickness)
  • Material preference
  • Estimated quantity
  • Required lead time
  • Budget range

Contact YC Brushes. We provide a free assessment and reply with a quote within 24 hours.

Have these five things ready before you ask for a quote

When a custom quote goes back and forth, it is usually not because the factory is inefficient but because there is not enough information to estimate from. Have the following five things ready and you will get a comparable quote the first time:

What to provideDetails
Application requirementsPurpose (cleaning / dust removal / sealing / polishing), operating environment (temperature, humidity, any contact with chemicals), machine specifications and space limits, performance requirements (cleaning power, durability, anti-static)
DimensionsOverall length, base width and thickness, trim length; roller brushes and disc brushes also need the diameter. Ideally attach a drawing or photos with the dimensions marked
Material preferenceFilament material, base material, special requirements (food grade, anti-static, high-temperature resistance). If you are not sure, describe the operating environment and let the factory recommend
Order quantityFirst trial production quantity, estimated annual usage, whether delivery is in batches
Lead time and budgetDesired delivery date, whether it is a rush order, budget range (optional, but providing it brings the quote closer to reality)

Having an existing brush in hand is the best starting point. Photos plus measurements are more precise than any written description and can go straight into the reverse engineering process.

How to choose a custom brush factory: 5 criteria

Choosing the wrong factory can lead to unstable quality, late delivery and after-sales disputes.

Below are the five key criteria for choosing a brush factory.

1. Manufacturing experience and expertise

Experience is the guarantee of quality.

Give priority to:

  • Factories established for 10 years or more
  • A rich record of industry cases
  • Engineers with expert knowledge of materials and structures

YC Brushes has been established for over 40 years and has served dozens of industries, including electronics, food, machinery and printing, building up extensive custom experience.

2. Custom capability

Not every factory has full custom capability.

Points to assess:

  • Whether it has design and drawing capability
  • Whether it can provide samples
  • Whether it has tooling capability
  • Whether it offers a wide choice of materials

The exclusive 3D-printed sampling technique at YC Brushes makes development more than twice as fast as the traditional way and greatly shortens your waiting time.

3. Quality control system

If quality is unstable, a low price is no use.

Points to check:

  • Whether there is a standard inspection process
  • Whether inspection reports are provided
  • The standard for controlling the defect rate
  • Whether there is a quality warranty

YC Brushes uses three inspections (first article + in-process + final) to make sure the quality of every batch is consistent.

4. Minimum order and lead time

Small-batch custom orders are a pain point for small and medium-sized businesses.

A good factory should offer:

  • A reasonable minimum order quantity (MOQ)
  • Flexible lead time arrangements
  • The ability to handle rush orders

At YC Brushes, order quantities are quoted per specification (the industry average minimum is 500-1,000 pieces). Please email us with your requirements, including for trial production.

5. After-sales service

After-sales service decides the quality of a long-term partnership.

Items to assess:

  • Whether the warranty policy is clear
  • Whether complaints are handled quickly
  • Whether technical support is adequate
  • Whether guidance on use is available

Custom brush application cases

Real cases show the value of custom work best.

Here are three successful ones.

Case 1 - Anti-static strip brush for electronics

Customer requirement A PCB manufacturer needed to remove dust from the surface of circuit boards without generating static that would damage components. Standard strip brushes could not meet the anti-static requirement.

Solution YC Brushes designed a dedicated anti-static strip brush:

  • Material: a blend of conductive carbon fiber + nylon
  • Dimensions: 500 mm long, 25 mm trim length
  • Feature: a conductive copper wire embedded in the base, which can be grounded to discharge static
  • Result: surface resistance below 10^6 Ω, meeting the anti-static standard

Outcome In the customer's tests the dust removal rate reached 98%, with no static problems at all. A follow-up order of 3,000 pieces was placed and the customer became a long-term partner. See more anti-static brush products.

Case 2 - Conveyor roller brush for the food industry

Customer requirement A biscuit factory needed to clear crumbs from its conveyor, but the brush had to comply with food safety regulations and withstand a temperature of 120°C.

Solution YC Brushes made a food-grade roller brush to order:

  • Material: PBT filament that complies with FDA 21 CFR 177
  • Dimensions: 80 cm long × 12 cm diameter
  • Feature: withstands temperatures up to 150°C and complies with food contact material standards
  • Mounting: a quick-release design, convenient for daily washing and disinfection

Outcome After half a year of use the filament showed no deformation and no shedding, the cleaning performance was excellent, and the brush passed the food safety audit. The customer was very satisfied and went on to order roller brushes in other specifications.

Case 3 - Precision cleaning brush for printing

Customer requirement A printing plant needed to remove ink residue from precision rollers, but filament that was too coarse would scratch the roller surface.

Solution YC Brushes developed an ultra-fine cleaning brush:

  • Material: ultra-fine PBT fiber with a filament diameter of only 0.08 mm
  • Density: high-density tufting, 200 filaments per square centimeter
  • Feature: soft and non-scratching, yet with enough cleaning power
  • Testing: no filament breakage after a 10,000-cycle test

Outcome The ink residue rate fell from the original 8% to below 1%, and print quality improved greatly. The customer praised the technical capability of YC Brushes and introduced several other companies in the same trade.

FAQ

Here are the 10 questions we are asked most often.

What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for custom brushes?

Order quantities are quoted per specification. Please email us with your requirements. (For reference, the industry average minimum is 500-1,000 pieces.)

How long does it take from design to delivery?

Lead times are quoted per specification. Please email us with your requirements. As a general guide to the process steps: requirements analysis and design take 3 days, 3D sampling 3-5 days, tooling 7-10 days, tufting 5-7 days, finishing 1-2 days, inspection 1-2 days, and packing and dispatch 1 day. Rush orders can be expedited by arrangement.

Is tooling always required? How much does it cost?

Custom work usually requires tooling, and the tooling fee ranges from NT$8,000 to NT$30,000 depending on complexity. The tooling belongs to the customer, however, and is not charged again on follow-up orders.

Can I order just 100 pieces?

Order quantities are quoted per specification; please email us with your requirements. 100 pieces is a very small quantity, so we suggest first checking whether a standard product could be used. For custom work at such a small quantity, the unit price will be higher.

Do I have to pay for samples?

For 3D-printed samples we charge a modest sampling fee of NT$1,000-3,000 (depending on complexity), which can be credited against the order amount once the order is confirmed. The first article sample after formal tooling is free.

How do you make sure production quality matches the sample?

YC Brushes uses three inspections (first article + in-process + final), and before volume production a first article is provided for the customer to confirm. Mass production starts only when it matches the sample.

Which specifications of a strip brush can be customized?

Almost every specification can be customized, including length (cut to any length), base material (plastic / metal), filament material (nylon / metal / PP and so on), trim length (10-100 mm) and density (high / medium / low). See The complete guide to strip brushes for details.

How is the price calculated? Will it be expensive?

The price is mainly determined by material, dimensions, density and quantity. Once you provide the specification, we quote within 24 hours. In general, the unit price for 300 pieces is about 30-40% higher than for 1,000 pieces. See our full breakdown of custom brush pricing for the detailed cost structure.

I only have the brush body. Can you do the tufting for me?

Yes! YC Brushes offers a contract tufting service. If you have an existing brush body and only need the filament replaced, we can take care of it, at a cost 50-70% lower than buying a whole new brush. See the guide to contract tufting services to learn more.

If I am not satisfied after using it, can it be returned or exchanged?

If it is a manufacturing defect or a specification error on our side, we replace it free of charge within 90 days. If the specification was confirmed by both sides at the design stage and the application requirement changes afterward, the brush has to be redesigned and requoted. That is why we recommend testing thoroughly at the sample stage and making sure the brush meets your needs before volume production.

Conclusion: with the right partner, custom work is no longer difficult

A custom brush is not an out-of-reach luxury.

With the right factory, clear communication and thorough planning, you can get a dedicated brush that fully meets your needs at a reasonable cost.

Three keys to a successful custom project

1. Define the requirements clearly The more clearly you explain the operating environment, the machine specifications and the functional requirements, the more precise a solution the factory can provide, and the less time is wasted on repeated revisions.

2. Choose a professional factory An experienced factory is not just a contract manufacturer but a technical partner. It can give professional input on material recommendations, structural optimization and cost control, so the custom project runs more smoothly. Want to know how to assess a factory? See Recommended custom brush makers: a factory comparison, where we provide a complete factory selection checklist.

3. Take sample testing seriously Test thoroughly at the sample stage, including whether the dimensions fit, whether the material is suitable and whether the function meets the target. Going into volume production only after everything is confirmed avoids disputes later.
